I am delighted to announce that I had an opportunity to introduce Japanese seasonal customs and traditions in the form of “shitsurai” through those videos on my YouTube channel with the support of Bunka-Cho, Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan.
“Shitsurai” refers to “seasonal decoration or the setting up of ceremonial spaces”, and I have introduced “shitsurai” of “Shou-gatsu”, New Year (January), “Setu-bun”, Ward off evil on New Year’s Eve (February), and “Momo no Sekku”, The Peach Flower Blossom Festival (March) in my videos with English subtitles.
Instead of relying on the auto-translate functions or software that can’t translate the subtle expression of “ki-go”, seasonal words, which are often used in Japanese poetry, and the quaint words accurately, we made an effort to translate the original Japanese words carefully so that you can enjoy the depth of our culture through both visual images and words.
The wish I have for those videos is that rather than them merely being viewed as “exotic Japanese customs” and curious things from a distant land, is that I hope they give people an opportunity to realize that everybody has a common sensitivity no matter where they live in the world.
By pausing as the seasons change and feeling something while gazing at the nature and plants around you, respecting something which is small and beautiful that gives you power, it provides the time for “appreciation and prayer for something which cannot be seen”, something which people should have in common. I would be delighted if my videos inspire you to enjoy the profound world lying in everyone’s daily life.
